When Life Doesn’t Turn Out as Planned (What to Do and How to Turn it Around)

When life doesn’t turn out as planned it’s easy to throw your hands up and say you’re just dealing with the cards you were dealt. But doing that doesn’t allow you to take control of or take responsibility for those things in your life that you DO have control over or that you CAN change.

Take it from someone who knows…”getting back on the saddle” is not always as hard as you think when life doesn’t turn out as planned. Here’s a few things you can do to start now:

1. Accept where you are: Denial doesn’t change reality. And that includes the reality that you are some place you don’t want to be. True change begins with accepting that you are where you are. If you can’t do this, you likely can’t embrace other truths that come with the reality of where you are.

2. Take ownership for what got you there: This is imperative if you want to change your direction. I am personally in a place where I see what my own part was in where I wound up last year. But I also saw clearly the hand that other people played in that. I don’t take blame for their part. But I did take ownership for my part along with the responsibility of desiring something different.

3. Ask for support and feedback: You will never live up to your full potential without the help, support, acceptance and love of a community. Whether that community is 5 or 500 doesn’t matter. What does matter is that you weren’t created or wired to live life and thrive alone. And those who truly care about you are like mirrors. They will tell you the absolute truth in LOVE. Because they want more for you and they want to see you succeed.

4. Find out what you need to move forward:1 – 3 means nothing if you don’t move forward. The Bible says it’s a sin to know better and not do it. Dale Carnegie said that “Knowledge isn’t power until it is applied”. Remember that in order to have a different outcome you not only have to do 1 – 3 above and possibly more, but you also have to DO something different. If you don’t know, go back to your support group, community or seek out professionals who specialize in helping people get from one area of life to another.
